Long exposure photography

I tried messing around with some long exposure night time shooting last night and found myself faced with a lot of noise on all of my photos. I have looked at many of your photos in here taken at night and they don't have any noise in them. I was wondering how are you taking these or are you editing them in some sort of software after? I did find some noise reduction softwares.

Thanks for the help.

I'm on the threshold of shooting some time exposure myself. Here is what I "think" I need to do to make them come out right. High ISO settings are one cause of noise. If the camera is handheld and you need a long exposure to get enough light the higher ISO can give you the extra stops to maybe get a steady looking shot. I'm thinking the main ingredient for a really dark night time is a tripod. Things like a remote shutter release and maybe sandbags to anchor the tripod might also help. With a steady platform you can now engage in exposures of 10, 20, 30 seconds. Trim that ISO setting down to reduce noise.

Like I said it is only theory with me but I would be curious to see if I gave some sage advice and to learn what else might be a factor. Wide angle over telephoto, higher f/stop over lower... things like that.

I'd try using manual mode so you can set the ISO at lowest possible to capture the shot. Tripod, remote trigger or wireless trigger, set mirror lock-up if possible, then play with the amount of time for the exposure.

Use the lowest possible ISO, a tripod and, a release of some sort as was said. If you cant afford a release then there is an old trick I used to do for astronomy shooting. You take a piece of cardboard and cover the front of the lens, click the shutter and remove the cardboard and finish the exposure, it eliminates the camera shake from your pressing the button.
