Canon recommends before or the day of the shoot to fully charge. Batteries left in the camera will slowly discharge even when off. If not using for extended time, then remove and place "contact" protective cover on it to store. Li ion don't have memory effect, but still can only be re-charge so many cycles.

I'm breaking in my Canon. I've been trying to run down the battery just to get a feel for just how much can I get out of it. At 2000 shutter clicks (only a few with flash) it looks like I'm set for another 500 till the battery dies. I normally won't recharge until I'm almost empty if I'm packing a known good spare.

recharge when it dies. No matter what, you should have a 2nd battery.

With Alkaline, NiCad and NiMh batteries, you should run them clear down before recharging, to avoid setting a memory effect. They last longer and run better when treated this way.

With Li-Ion batteries, it is better to recharge often, preferably, after every use and before going out on an extended shoot. Experiments have shown that they last longer when treated this way, than if run down all the way every time.

This study discusses that:

NiCad yes. NiMh not really. NiMh doesn't suffer from memory effect (voltage depletion) like NiCad does and discharging all the time isn't necessary. HOWEVER, discharging a NiMh battery full and charging it again occasionally will help keep a NiMh from developing slight voltage depletion (it's called "cycling" or "conditioning" and good charger will do this as part of it's programming... or you can do it yourself by just letting it run out completely I suppose).

NiMH and NiCad will discharge slowly over time too, but Alkaline rechargeables don't suffer from this. However, new low self-discharge NiMH cells, such as Sanyo "Eneloop" can keep their charge (around 85%) for a year. Which is pretty good and pretty much eliminates the memory effect Alkaline rechargeables have (like I said, you only need to cycle NiMh batteries occasionally). Also these low self-discharge batteries are really good for using in flashes and I'd recommend people get a bunch of them.

I use to be majorly into battery powered RC cars so I learnt a lot about batteries.
