I am completely new

My friend gave me his Nikon D60 when he upgraded his camera. I know nothing about DSLR or even about photography. I have a 18-55mm lens. I would like to learn, so is there anything else I should purpose to help me? Do I need another lens?

Take pictures, lots and lots of pictures.

The understanding exposure book is essential. Do a quick search on the rule of thirds (its more of a guideline than a rule, but good to know). Start looking at photos and taking them apart. If you like a shot, try to figure out why you like it, then figure out what techniques were used.

My friend threw out the manual after he knew how to use the camera. So I don't have the manual.

urgh one should never threw out a manual, even if you never use it again. You can download the manual. Google Nikon D60 manual. It'll probably be in a pdf format.

Check out the Tips section in this forum..

You can learn alot from there.
It wouldn't hurt to pick up another lens. You could buy another zoom lens, that has a decent range for overall shooting. Or if you know exactly what field you like to shoot, buy a lens for that. Like a telephoto for wildlife 70-300 (I wouldn't go much higher just yet, you are just getting your feet wet), macro lens. or a good 85mm prime lens for portraits.
