Should family/friends get a free photoshoot? or a % off?

I would say free. At least close family/friends.

IMO, free when you are first starting. When you decide to start charging, give family/friends a discount. Although I think parents and silblings should still be free...just have them pay for prints.

You can always barter too. I've done that a few times and that way people feel like they've paid without having to come up with cash. It's a thought.

I think there should be some sort of exchange. money, need something fix etc..

I think to start do them free, its a good way of fine tuning your portrait skills. Remember if your not sure what your doing and you charge someone for less than acceptable image results you can do more damage to your reputation !!

I dont shoot for family ever! The reason being is then Im expected to show up with my camera and when I dont some get a pissy. Same with friends I never show up to parties with the intent of photographing a thing. I might but I dont show them because then you get invited to shoot for free and cant enjoy the party.
