Canon AE1 or Olympus OM-2

I have a canon AE1 and thinking about going digital but can quite make myself take the plunge yet. A friend of mine has an Olympus OM-2 and is convinced his is better quality than mine. what do you think. I've only used a Canon. Also what digital camera would be best for a beginner in the digital world if I can make myself take the plunge?

I have had a Canon AE-1 programme 35mm slr for over twenty years and still love it and it was one of the reasons I stuck with Canon when getting a digital as well.
I only have the low end 400D but love it, it's great for what I need.

I've got a big soft spot for the AE-1 as I have 4 of them that I still use on occasion. Also have an AE-1P that gets used but I use the A-1s the most followed by the F-1s.

Camera quality is subjective. I wouldn't refuse using either camera. Both cameras have their good and not so good points. I've seen a person who knows their simple to operate camera very well, knock the socks off another who has a multi-featured camera who doesn't know the camera very well. Olympus had some killer optics but then Canon has more types of glass available for the FD mounts. Mind you, I do have a Canonet QL rangefinder that is still going strong...

First digital? Go with what you are most comfortable with and has features that you can use. Work with the camera store and you'll end up with something you'll be happy with. To keep things simple for a family member in her 70s who wanted a digital, we found that the Canon EOS Rebel XSi fit the bill quite nicely. It's simple to use and maintain, has good quality, and has features that allow her to grow and do more with the camera as her experience with the camera grows. That fact that she could borrow a lens or two from me may have also had something to do with getting the Rebel too. LOL
