How did people shoot macro photography with film cameras?

the same as you do with digital, one just needed a macro lens that fit onto their 35mm film camera.

My grandfather had a Pentax 35mm film, with a zoom lens, which said macro on it. I imagine it was a macro lens, but I thought all macro lenses were primes.

Most zoom lenses that say "macro" are really just close focus optics. They are not optimized for macro (eg they are not " flat field" lenses)..The few ,true macro zooms (I only know of 2, one Nikkor & one older Vivitar) are very expensive & have long been out of production....Most "true" macro lenses go to life size (1:1) although some need additional diopters or tubes, many do not. I have several older manual focus macro lenses that I use (Nikon & Vivitar).. There are other ways to shoot macro (bellows, tubes, etc.) but nothing beats a lenses designed for it. Oh, to answer the OP's question, the same way as you do with Digital except now you get instant feedback as to when you got the shot. Less money spent with digital.

:goodpost: :agree:
And all of that is how we do it now. I used to like using Velvia for macro because it gave good vibrant colors. I will now use tubes but actually prefer the bellows for their versatitlity.
