Camera in the cold

What are the dos and don'ts of taking a camera outside in the cold to take pictures?

The main problem with newer cameras & shooting in the cold is going to be with batteries which don't respond well in cold situations. Keep an extra battery in your pants pocket where it will stay warm. It really has to be pretty cold for the batteries to be affected though. The temperature shouldn't have any adverse effects on the cameras operation other than that (unless you want to shoot in sub zero Arctic temperatures where the helicoid grease in lenses may harden- people who routinely shoot in the Arctic have their cameras/lenses serviced by the OEM to account for this)

I think the biggest do is let your equipment climatize gradually. Keep your bag(s) closed until things warm up or cool down. I'll keep my gear in a cool or cold place until it's time to use it. That way the change in temp isn't as drastic. Another thing I do is I put my lenses and camera body(s) in tightly sealed baggies. This lets the moisture collect on the plastic instead of your equipment. Moisture is the biggest danger to equipment when changing temps suddenly. Nothing worse than a good lens ruined due to lens mold or a good camera that's been wrecked due to moisture. (Just try taking some things outside from a nice warm humid home and watch the moisture collect then take things back in when they've reached outside temp.)
Take some sort of cover or protection with you when you're out shooting. I find that an inexpensive plastic cover sheet and elastic bands is all I need to keep my gear dry in winter months. It's great protection against snow falls and other things that come from above, like water dripping off of evergreens. I carry 3 or 4 sheets with me in my bag as they're light and compact.
Hope this helps some.
