Shooting Snow

When I shoot winter photos on a clear day, the snow turns a blue color because of the reflection from the sky. What is the best method to transform the blue snow to the crisp white that it should be?

Well it isnt just the sky at play here. Snow on its own has some blue cast to it as well. Have you tried a good Circular Polarizer or, a Neutral Density filter? I find those work for me.

If your camera has exposure compensation, you could try setting it to 11/2 to 2 stops overexposure, depending on your angle to the sun. You will most likely have to bracket to get the exposure you want.

Meter off of the blue sky instead of the snow. You should get whiter snow.

Now does this apply to yellow snow also? LOL just joking. Good post and information. Snow can be difficult to photograph and get right.

Here's a web site that may inspire some of you to try a different way of photographing snow when there's no or low light. www.timsimmons.co.uk/norway1.php
I love the way he uses light(s) to get the textures that snow has and to highlight a focal point. Am looking forward to experimenting with light on snow this winter and trying this technique. I find Tim Simmons work stunning.

WOW those are beautiful photos. Now how is the photographer getting the light like that?

I think he may be using either a halogen or LED flood light hanging from an extension pole that's out of viewfinder range. Will find out when I start experimenting. I just hope I don't need a pack mule. It's going to be fun!
