PS in my course I save the RULES of composition for later (rule of thirds, etc.). The reason behind it is for photos like this one. I like to see what "balances" in my students own eyes, much more than simply following the rules, which can take over EVERY shot they take if picked up too early.
Good photography is more about using the subject well than it is about applying well defined rules.
But then, I'm just a bit of an anarchist.

That's a good idea. I have always used my borders because I'm weird. Makes shots interesting... especially if one needs to be cropped.
