It's different compositionally -- which is good. I too like the "mood" and the b&w conversion does it justice.

PS in my course I save the RULES of composition for later (rule of thirds, etc.). The reason behind it is for photos like this one. I like to see what "balances" in my students own eyes, much more than simply following the rules, which can take over EVERY shot they take if picked up too early.

Good photography is more about using the subject well than it is about applying well defined rules.

But then, I'm just a bit of an anarchist. ;)

Thank you.

I agree regarding the composition theory.

It works for things like landscapes but street and abstract work it's often better to throw that book out the window.

I like the mood of it...but something is missing to just completely top it off. I can't put my finger on it.

That's a good idea. And it's true that once they know about thirds people will take every shot that way, or not take potentially good shots because they don't meet the rule.

I have always used my borders because I'm weird. Makes shots interesting... especially if one needs to be cropped. :ohmy:
