When converting to black and white you also want good color to work with.

There is a LOT you can do when converting to adjust the tones in the final piece.

Is that what you mean? Why are there so many black & white conversion apps, and tools -- and tricks?

I convert to B&W in photoshop, but I see lots of mono conversion software out there, is there an advantage in buying the software

I've not tried all of it.

Lightroom presets work for me, but only AFTER I do the editing it needs in color.

In other words, a good color tonal range results in a good black and white conversion, without too much effort.

:)

It's also the method I teach. A former student's work:

Both were posted yesterday. My Mom's With Cameras.

There's that, plus the composition feels awkward to me. The subject seems as if it's being pushed out of the frame, meanwhile the white blob is occupying major real estate.

I think I would have changed my angle or something to eliminate the doorway completely, while pulling the eye to that foreground equipment.

Or perhaps the "white blob" IS the focus. The path sorta draws your eye up to it. So the whiteness sorta adds an air of mystery.

However I agree the composition could do with some shifting one way or the other.

So the amorphous white blob is more fitting to "typical industrial stuff" than the machinery, IYO. Clever!
