Looking for opinions please: B&W or color?

Is either of these preferable to the other? From the roof of Il Duomo, Milan. (I used embedded links, so click and follow to see a larger version.)

Yes, this is the original color. I wasn't too keen on saturating it, and it was a cloudy day.

As always, any expressed thoughts are appreciated!

I like both! :judge:

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.

It's a good B&W but I prefer the color. I like seeing the browns, blues and pinks in the stone.

B&W would be the preferred image if you worked on it a little more to give it more drama IMO.

Agreed. It could mess with your eyes, which is a good thing.

Thanks all. Creating a B&W version is a bit of an afterthought, but I'm liking the idea.

I'm still learning to "see" in black and white, so I'm not real sure what this means. Histogram-wise I've got things pretty spread out, and this new version seems pretty stark to me:

Any googling about "B&W drama" seems to point to contrast, which I pumped a bit in this version. What else am I missing here? The original (above) is large enough for someone to take and experiment with.

Input appreciated!

I prefer the color, although the black and white is nice too.
Love seeing this.

I think it works both ways, I like the interesting perspective and use of pattern. The original B&W seemed to need some adjustment to the contrast but it might take some working on it to find a good balance. I think with B&W being the absence of color it can make the tones and contrast more of an important feature.

What I learned with B&W was to have a 'black' black and a 'white' white somewhere in the photo. And when I put a sheet of paper in the developer and it went instantly coal black (because I forgot to turn off the focusing light on the enlarger when I exposed the image) the instructor said to save it, that was my 'black' black... For me the 'white' white is usually not in highlights or reflections etc.; if I use that as my 'white' the contrast usually doesn't look right.

I find that the guidelines I learned and used with film and darkroom prints works with digital too as far as what I'm going for - I don't like the Photoshop conversions and go to Mode-remove color and then adjust from there as needed, that seems to give me better results.

I think B&W vers 2 contrast may be overcooked. In vers 1 the light areas could use more contrast, but do this without further lightening those areas. The dark shadows in vers 1 are pretty good as is. Think of this as a subtle HDR exercise.

I like this better in B&W. I think a little more contrast would help it.

So I finally found the time to do some research into what makes a B&W image interesting, and did some more work on this. Here's my final version. Am I getting closer?
