To Flat?

I would appreciate feedback on this. Is is to flat, uninteresting?
Should I have tried harder to get the bottom of the heart in the frame?

Hi Sherri,

I see no one's replied yet, so I'll throw my 2 cents' worth out there. Yes, this photo is very flat and as is, it's just a snapshot. If you have an opportunity to reshoot it, I'd start with looking for a different angle to add some perspective. You'll have a challenge getting your lighting right, to show the surface texture and the scratched-in heart, but a reflector might help.

I'd also recommend looking at some of the rules of composition. Placement of your main subjects in the frame is important, as is how you use the negative space in the scene.

I think you might find the video here helpful, and there are some great links on the page to other resrouces, too:

Hope this helps!

Thank you, I loved the video and I will be checking into the suggested reading you offered. The video talked about lines of direction. Look at this picture I took and see if this is a good interpretation of using lines. I think that I got a lot of interesting lines, curves, triangles etc.

A much better photo. You have a nice leading line that intersects with the bridge, which carries the eye deeper into the picture. Overall, maybe a little busy, but a definite improvement over the first one.

Keep shooting and don't be shy about posting your photos for critique. There are a lot of talented people here that can help you learn, and that's what the site is about.

Be sure and follow Photography Talk on Facebook, too. ( www.facebook.com/photographytalk ) You'll find links to helpful resources and great photos posted there every day.
