Purchase of new len

:) I am looking at a lens for my Canon EOS T2i camera that I can use 99% of the time (I do not like changing lens; currently an 18-55mm and a 55-250mm). The one I want is an Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom. Problem: It cost almost three times as must as my camera. Question: Have any of you run into this same situation? If so and you bought the lens, was it worth it. The reviews have been positive for this lens. I am not a professional but take all kinds of pictures for a hobby and sometimes enter them in photo contest. Money is not a problem yet (with this market you never know), but is it really worth it?

I have a 18-270 lens by Tamron (see sponsor ad below) and the zoom range is very attractive to me. I usually have that lens attached when I grab-n-go and I seldom wish I had brought along a different selection.. Your choice to me seems ideal. I vote go for it.

I have the Canon 28-135. Love the extra zoom. But 28mm is a very, very mild wideangle. And this old design (full frame) does have a lot of weight to carry around.

:agree: The 28mm end of that lens, on a T2i, will give you a "real" focal length of almost 45mm. So it's not really much of a wide angle when you put it on a crop-sensor camera. Are you familiar with the differences between crop-sensor and full-frame?

As for the question of whether it's worth it or not, yes. The quality and sharpness of a Canon L lens will make a difference regardless of which Canon body you put it on. A good photographer with a cheap body and high end lens will make better images than he/she would with an expensive body and a crappy lens. The glass you use matters!

Another plus is that the lens will far outlive your T2i. So don't be afraid to invest more in it than you did in the camera itself. And when you upgrade to a professional camera, you'll have a lens that works with both crop-sensor bodies and full-frame bodies. (Your 18-55 and 55-250 will not.) This is the main reason I never once regretted buying a 24-105L lens when I had my XTi. Now that I have a full-frame camera, it's still my favorite walk-around lens.

I have rented the Canon 28-300 several times because it fits my needs at times for wildlife shooting. It is not what I would consider a "walk around" lens, due to it's weight and size.

The lens does get good reviews and I enjoy using it but would not consider buying the lens .... just wouldn't use it enough to justify the $3,000.00 price tag. The lens is a very niche item so you rarely see a used model come up for sale.

You may want to consider two camera bodies .... this works for many of us. One has the shorter focal length lens and the other the longer.

I would also consider the Tamron lens option as well
