How to set up a flashgun?

Hi there,

Basically I got a flash-gun for my birthday. To be exact, this one: www.amazon.co.uk/Electronic-Speedlight-S...YBKA6/ref=pd_cp_ce_1

As a flash it seems great but I can't get it to do that little burst the built in flash does in order to let the auto-focus, focus. So if im out in a dark environment, like bonfire night, and want to take a photo of some people I have to manually focus without really being able to see them. Which didn't look or work well at all.

If I try and go into the flash settings when it is attached, I just get a message saying that I can't alter settings with this flash?

Any help or advice would be great and much appreciated.

The AF assist normally isn't a burst of light, but rather a projection of dim red light in a lined pattern that comes from the red panel at the bottom of the flash. You may not notice it unless you look for it, as it's meant to be unobtrusive.

What is the brand? I don't see a list of specs that says it has AF assist. The fact that they claim it works with Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, and Fuji indicates to me that this is a no frills, all manual flash. It mentions ittl and ettl, but I have never before encountered a flash that works with both. Normally flash manufacturers would make a separate, dedicated model for each system. Possibly they mean it can be triggered by both Nikon and Canon optical triggers, but that is not at all the same as ittl and ettl, which is auto flash exposure. It does not work with your in-body flash controls because it is not ettl or ittl. All features/settings will have to be controlled on the flash.

I read through the Amazon reviews. I would suggest most were written by goof balls or by agents of the seller.
