Which lens to rent?

I'm going to the San Diego Safari Park and San Diego Zoo this weekend, and my cheap Tamron telephoto lens takes an eternity to focus and I won't be happy if I miss a lot of shots because of it. Plus it's a very soft lens that I'm probably going to sell and be glad to get rid of...

So, I'm going to rent a Canon telephoto and am looking for opinions! The two I'm considering are:

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM, and
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

I like the idea of the extra reach and L glass on the 100-400, but I'd also like to walk around with a lens that doesn't weigh a ton. I've read that the 100-400 is a little soft after 300mm anyway, and that the 70-300 is sharp throughout as long as you stop down to f/6.3 at 300mm. They both have their pros and cons, so I'm not sure which one to go with.

Anyone have experience with these lenses and if so what do you recommend?

Also, price isn't a factor since the difference for a one-week rental between these 2 lenses is exactly $1.

I've got no experience with any of those. But there are lots of Canon shooters over on FM.

Canon 50D, Olympus PL2

No direct experience but a buddy of mine shoots Canon and the extra reach of the 100-400 with the constant aperture is a lens of choice for him along with his trusty 300mm 2.8

Thanks, guys. I'm going with the 100-400. The extra focal length should be worth the additional weight.
