Must have lenses?

12 years 3 weeks ago #218570 by Amberfarley80
I am in the process of buying two lenses, I was wondering what would be a must have for telephoto lens, I shoot ball games for my kids and I would like to get into wedding in a year or less. I've also been wanting to get the 50mm f/1.8 but recently found a 28mm f/2.8 and i was wondering for portraits which would be the best way to go?
Thanks for all your help.

Your profile says you have a digital rebel. What lens do you have now? What's your budget?

Your best bet for ballgames is probably a 70-200 f/2.8. However, that's big bucks. A 75-300 f/4-5.6 is more affordable. The 50 would be a classic focal length for portraits on a crop sensor body. The 28 is a great "normal" focal length for your camera. Try to find an f/1.8 version though.

Hope this helps!

The 70-300 with image stabilization would be an excellent complement to your kit lens, assuming it's in your budget. A friend of mine has this lens and he says it's good for sports/action type shots. If $550 is too rich for your budget, there is a 75-300 without image stabilization which is less than half the price. There is also a sigma version with image stabilization for about $350; I don't know too much about it.

The 50 f/1.8 or f/1.4 (depending on your budget) would be an excellent portrait lens, giving you much shallower depth of field than your kit lens, as well as more ability to shoot natural light portraits at dusk. A 28 f/1.8 is also very good, the difference being that you will be closer to your subject. Since your kit lens already contains both of those focal lenghts, it should be easy for you to decide if you prefer to shoot portraits at 50mm or 28mm.

Good luck with your shopping.
