Macro Lens

12 years 3 weeks ago #219463 by ICUC2
I am a hobbiest photographer on a very limited budget. I would like to have a decent macro lens. I am using a Cannon Rebel XS ~ 58mm body. Currently I only have two kit lenses; Cannon 18-55mm and Cannon 75-300mm. I would appreciate any and all suggestions on what macro lens would be best for my use. I would be using it primarily for insects and flower blossoms. Also any opinions on refurbished lenses? I love this site and I love taking photos!!

I was hoping not to exceed $300.

You should be able to find a Canon 60mm macro lens (used) on EBay. Used 100mm lenses typically sell for around $400.00. Both are excellent macro lenses.

I highly recommend the Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG macro/zoom lens. It has a macro functionality between 200-300mm and I cant say anything but good things about this lens! I bought it for $150 from an ebay vendor. (gotta know where to look)

The magnification goes up to 1:2 which I believe is 0.5x life size. (if im not mistaken)

I use it for all my wildlife, macro, and even some portrait shootings. Definatly look into it if your on a budget!
- I'd post a link, but I'm new here so I have to have at least 10 posts to post a link up.

I'm not familiar with the 70-300mm, but have you considered adding extension tubes? They would be an inexpensive way to allow you to focus much closer to your subjects, and not cost an arm & leg.

What you are is so loud, I can't hear a word you say!
