Buying a speedlight, would you buy anything other than a Canon speedlight?

12 years 9 hours ago #224859 by The Original Daisy
Are there any other speedlights that you would consider other than Canon? It would be nice to save some bucks with out cutting the quality of the speedlight. A couple of my friends who have Canons have suggested I stick with Canon only. But I'm stubborn and want to get a 2nd opinion here.

I'm keeping one eye open for deals on a Yongnuo for my Canon. But I have no prior experience with that brand, simply getting ready to take a flyer on it.

Promaster makes a good , less expensive alternative for your Canon. I have several of their products and find the quality to be very good.
hope this helps save a hundred bucks- Rob

For shooting with the flash power set manually I'd go with whatever.

For shooting in ETTL I've only tried Canon brand. In the past I found that auto-flash worked best with the camera manufacturer brand. That may not be the case these days. Obviously some brands, such as Metz, have good reputations, but they are about the same price as Canon. I've been intrigued by those Yongnuo speedlights, and if someone I trusted told me they worked just as good I'd go with them in a heartbeat.

EDIT: I was checking out some Yongnuo reviews. Particularly one where they compared the Yongnuo YN-565 EX with the EOS 580ex. The flash power was slightly less (which is suggested by the model numbers, 56 vs 58), and it didn't have some features such as high speed sync and it couldn't be the master remote. I don't use HSS that often, but when I need it I'm glad I have it. Other than that the reviews were favorable.

I'm thinking about getting a Yongnuo myself, mostly for slave use. The lack of HSS doesn't bother me at their price point. The only reason I'm still on the fence about it is that reviews are of brand new units. I want to hear from somebody who's been using it regularly for some period of time and see what they have to say about the quality and durability.

My Yongnuo YN465 arrived this weekend. With a guide number of only 33 I was concerned about the output. My Canon 50D has a max ISO of 3200, and my greatest telephoto a max aperture of f/5.6. So I set up a night time test with this combination, and the flash set to Manual, max output. Tape measured off 50 feet, the target, in the dark, turned out to be way over exposed! So added another 50', even at 100' the target was still slightly over exposed. For my standards (hobbyist) this thing has plenty of output for night time use (direct). Likely not so hot as a daylight fill, but that was never my primary use.

I like the design of the unit very much, physical quality and finish is easily on par with the competition. But I cannot recommend Yongnuo to novices or casual shooters, simply because they are so hard to get a hold of. If the day comes that a major outlet like B&H or Calumet stocks Yongnuo, that will be a real game changer.

That's 33/m, so more than 100/ft.

At GN 100 and 50' normal exposure would be f/2 @ ISO 100 or f/11 @ ISO 3200. The inverse square law says -2 stops for doubling the distance: f/5.6 @ ISO 3200 for GN 100 at 100'.

GN / distance = f/# for ISO 100

Just check that your Yongnuo seller has the unit in stock, and in your country! Crossing the Pacific from China to the USA added a week to my shipment.
