If you hate messing with computers (photo editing) and you happen to have a good, reliable film processing outfit near you, then the old 35mm camera could be an option. But very few of us find ourselves in such circumstances, much more likely to go with a digital camera.

I would probably choose any Canon DSLR from the 10D on over an Elan, but it would be helpful to know more about you, your style, what you are shooting, etc.... Either is quite capable of wonderful and intriguing photos in the right hands.

At this point photography is just a hobby. I am shooting mostly people. However, I do love to shoot nature as well. I don't want to spend too much money right now, or in the near future. If I get a film slr, I was going to just take the film to walgreens. I do have a computer, editing software and a decent photo printer at home.

I wouldn't have high hopes for Walgreens. Likely there are still mail-in outfits that do good processing, somewhere. But since you already have the software and printer, a DSLR makes a lot more sense to me.

:agree: I think if you don't want to spend too much money you need to take the cost of film and processing into account. Once you buy a card for the dslr you're done for a while. Film is the gift that goes on taking!

Depends I guess on if you want to spread out the cost or make a larger purchase at once. And how much it costs to get your film developed and if you're happy with the photos you get.

Most places seem to give you choices with processing film, if you just want the film developed, prints made, a CD made (so you can do your own prints) etc. For example with B&W film I'd usually just get the film developed and maybe a proof sheet because I was doing prints in the darkroom (which I since 'lost' while the building's under construction). I have a local camera store I use, but have looked into places to send film for specialty sizes that they don't process locally.

It worked for me to get a digital and film camera bodies that used the same lenses, and I have older cameras that I've had a long time or bought used so the expense of film and developing isn't an issue for me. I guess it just depends on how and where you want to spend your money.

Either the film or digital camera could probably suit your needs, although as mentioned you might do better with another Canon besides the Elan; I've done well buying used from a reputable dealer like KEH.

You can get a used or refurbished Canon or Nikon DSLR with a lens for under $400. KEH has a "like new" Canon Rebel XT kit for under $290.

Roll of film + dev + disk = $10 (at least). At first it's cheaper than digital, but over time more expensive. It really depends on how much shooting you plan on doing.

I think you can find an excellent used 35mm SLR for next to nothing if not free. There are many good models going under $50, even under $30, on Ebay. Ask your relatives to look in their closets and attics for an old 35mm SLR that hasn't been used in a decade. They are all over out there.

An older model Rebel can do a great job - some of my favorite shots were taken with my old XTi before I upgraded to a 5D. For a hobbyist, an XTi or similar would meet or exceed your needs for at least a good few years.

On the film side, my Nikon 35mm camera was exactly what HP described -- my dad found his old camera in his closet and asked me if I was interested in it since I was starting to learn photography at the time. It's kind of fun to get out and shoot film once in a while, especially with the same camera that my parents used to take pictures of me and my siblings growing up. But I personally wouldn't want to make it my primary camera outfit.
