I just got my first dslr today. YAY, I am excited! I am having a little trouble adjusting the f-stop though? Can someone go over this with me. There is got to be something that I am missing?

Congrats on the new camera!

What mode are you shooting in? If you're in Av, then your adjustment dial will do exactly that. If you're in Manual, I believe you probably need to hold down a button while turning the dial. If you have the manual that came with the camera, it will tell you which button. If you don't, you can download it from Canon:

I got the same camera a couple weeks ago. I've been playing with the f-stop in manual mode so I can also adjust the shutter speed too.

I shoot all manual, all the time LOL - I do actually shoot mostly using all manual settings because I've used mostly mechanical film cameras, that's what I learned on. I usually reset my camera to f8 and 1/125 so next time I use the camera it's set at mid-range settings that are usable in a variety of situations.

I use the meter to tell me how I need to adjust settings from there, if I need to open the lens more and go to a larger aperture to let in more light, or to a smaller lens opening so I don't overexpose the image. If I want most of the foreground and background of the image in focus I'll use a smaller aperture; if I want to have a subject in focus and keep the background more blurry I use a larger aperture. And they're all fractions, you could mentally put a 1/ in front of the numbers.

If say it was cloudy and the meter shows you're not getting enough light, you'd need to open the lens more or raise the ISO or some of both (I don't usually go to a slower than 1/125 shutter speed to keep the image as sharp as possible - at least that's what works for me handheld). If it was sunny, and the meter showed I had waaay too much light coming in to the camera; I'd go to a lower ISO (unless already at 100/200) a faster speed and/or a smaller aperture - depending on what the meter indicates and what depth of field you want.

I shot in manual mode most of my life. Now I'm having fun learning the other modes. Links to more thoughts on the different camera modes -
