Canon Adds a Third 35mm Lens, Its First-Ever with Image Stabilization – Is It Worth It?

Keeping with its new trend of adding Image Stabilization to its prime lenses, Canon is adding yet another to its line with the announcement of the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM. With a maximum aperture of f/2 and a 4-stop IS system, this new lens gives users the ability to capture clear images when shooting handheld in low-light conditions. This wide-angle prime lens will be Canon's first 35mm to include optical Image Stabilization (IS), similar to the newly announced 24-70mm f/4 which will also include IS. Both lenses are expected to begin shipping next month.
When compared to its siblings, the new 35mm f/2 IS lens offers an interesting gamble. Beginning with a comparison against its top of the line prime lens, the EF 35mm f/1.4 L USM , the f/2 version is much lighter at 11.8 ounces instead of 20.5 ounces. The new lens is also nearly an inch smaller in length and half the price of the f/1.4 version at $850 compared to $1,480. The 35mm f/2 also comes with Image Stabilization, whereas its f/1.4 sibling does not, however it still does not earn Canon's designation as an elite L-series lens. However, if we stack the 35mm f/2 IS lens against its non-IS sibling , the benefits and drawbacks are much more challenging. The IS version is heavier at 11.8 ounces versus 7.4 ounces, and it is pricier at $850 compared to $319 for the non-IS version.
