Canon Announces New Lens Caps – Love It or Leave It?

Lens caps generally aren't the most exciting photography accessories, but today, Canon is making headlines with the debut of their newly redesigned snap-on front lens caps with center pinch release. Canon lens caps have long been structured to release from the end of a lens by pinching the outside lip of the cap. This older design has been a complaint among photographers who heavily use lens hoods, as the cap becomes a huge hassle to remove when the hood is intact. Some photographers may also argue that the older lens cap model made it more prone to accidentally pop off and get lost, costing camera owners extra money to replace the cap. An older model 77mm snap-on Canon lens , for example, costs $10.95 to replace. A small price to pay that can still add up over time.

Canon's new lens caps have been updated with a center-pinch release , making it easier for use with lens hoods, and arguably making them attach more securely to the lens. These newly improved lens caps will be available in the 82mm, 77mm, 72mm, 67mm, and 58mm sizes and are expected to be on the market and shipping with EF items starting in 2013.

For photographers who aren't staunchly committed to buying brand-only accessories, here is a cool multi-functional lens cap for your consideration. Acting as both a lens cover and a grey card, the unique White Balance Lens Cap helps calibrate your camera to the perfect white balance setting. All you have to do is leave the lens cap on your lens, switch your camera's custom white balance mode on, and snap a photo. Quick and easy with a center-pinch release, this custom lens cap also just looks cool with a white marble-like ball in the center. It's pricier than a regular lens cover, but with the added grey card function, it could be well worth the extra cost.

What do you think about Canon's brand new line of lens caps? Do you care enough about lens cap functionality to upgrade to the new design, or are you bold enough to go off-brand for a two-in one feature?

My Sigma lens came with a center-pinch cap. I fumble with it more than with the old rim pinch.

Huh. Nikon, Tamron and Sigma all use this style. Canon finally got on board? Wonder what took so long...
