Is A New Canon Super Telephoto Lens on the Way?

The Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS is a monster of a telephoto lens that Canon Rumors is speculating may soon have a successor in early 2013. What are the indicators? First, the 800mm’s lens hood, the ET-155, is said to have been recently discontinued. Second, Nikon is working on a 800mm f/5.6 with vibration reduction (image stabilization), said to weigh a great deal less than their existing Nikon 800mm. These are certainly indicators that Canon will soon be announcing an updated version of their 800mm f/5.6, hopefully containing image stabilization and reduced weight (the current lens weighs 9.9 lbs).
The current Canon EF 800mm f/5.6 IS USM lens is priced at $13,299 and was first introduced in June 2008; it is the longest telephoto lens in the Canon catalogue. Interestingly, it weighs less than the EF 600mm f/4 IS lens , but doesn’t cost less. Other similar long-reaching lenses by Canon include the 100-400mm, 400mm, and 500mm. There is also a 200-400mm f/4 IS L lens in the works, but it hasn’t started shipping yet.
