Canon for Macro Jewelry Shots

11 years 4 months ago #263964 by Goldsmith
Just wondered if anyone can help me figure out what the best Canon set up would be for shooting my jewelry ?

I have about a $2000 budget.

I will need something that will have a really good sensor and handle a lot of lighting conditions well and I will also need a really good macro lens that will give me absolutely sharp crystal clear shots.

Any input will be greatly appreciated
Thanks !

I don't shoot macro with my Canon, but I have a few thoughts

I would expect jewelry macro shoots to be in a studio setting, not in the field, yes? If so, then you will have complete control over the lighting. Which removes any requirement for a really good sensor that handles a lot of lighting conditions well.

Macro is one of the areas where Canon has an edge over Nikon, there are several Canon macro lenses to choose from. Most macro shooters prefer a longish focal length, that gets the camera out of the immediate neighborhood of the subject, making room for lights, etc. Just which of these lenses is sharpest, I don't know. I depend on the reviews on sites like fredmiranda and slrgear for that research.

Macro is one area where LCD liveview composing and focusing can be preferred to the viewfinder. So when comparing camera bodies check the pixel count for the LCD, as well as whether it can fold out (for viewing at an angle). Remote viewing with a monitor would be really cool.

IMHO lighting and image processing are going to make a bigger difference to the final outcome than the exact camera body or lens. Get the body you are comfortable with, and the lens that leaves enough in the budget for nice lights.
