Want to upgrade from my Rebel XSi

4 years 7 months ago #657434 by jjanis
I have had my Canon Rebel SXi for quite a long time and use it along with a Nikon P900.  The last couple of years we have traveled to Montana and I'd like to photograph wildlife from a long distance that are usually in low light at dusk. Neither camera seems to satisfy those conditions.  Is there a Canon ( around $1,000 price range) I could upgrade to that might meet my needs and allow me to still use all these Canon lenses I have?  And it there a particular affordable lens you might recommend for the above conditions?  Thanks in advance!

Usually telephoto lenses are desired for wildlife photography......they can get quite pricey and will be your challenge to afford way over any new or used camera body....

Why so serious?

I'll go with "no, not at that price point."

Now, buying a newer, full-frame body will get you better performance for low light. And having more pixels on the sensor allows for cropping. But a long lens will set you back just over $1000, even used, and the inexpensive ones are not particularly fast. Again, you can mitigate slow lenses with better sensors.

Everything is a trade off.

I'd suggest looking at the 7D mk II (about $1000) and rent a long lens when you actually need one. Or rent both when you need them for wildlife, and pick up a newer APS-C body for day to day.

Upgrading the Rebel won't help with the long distance issue unless you get a high enough megapixel camera for severe cropping and that's not happening for $1000. A long telephoto lens is the solution. Renting a lens as Gary suggested is an excellent solution. In fact you could rent a body and a lens if you are just using it one time a year.
