Connecting 7D to a Windows PC?

4 years 2 months ago #675102 by Montebank
I have a Canon EOS 7D. I have been trying to find out the lifetime shutter activation count. I understand that this can be done by connecting the 7D to a Window PC using a Windows Utility program called EOSInfo. The connection is effected by using an 'IFC-200U Interface cable' (page 3 of the 7D Instruction Manual). Page 16 of the Manual shows a diagram of the camera's connection ports, including a "PC terminal (page 130)" However, page 130 refers to the 'PC terminal' only in the context of attaching flash units; no mention is made of connecting to a PC. The relevant port on my 7D camera is round and has a 'flash' lightning arrow symbol next to it. There is no USB symbol.
I retained the box and wrapping etc. when I bought the 7D new a number of years ago. There is no IFC-200U interface cable in the box nor do I remember ever having had one. (I do have the AVC-DC400ST Stereo AV cable.)
Google searches suggest the IFC-200U interface cable is still available to purchase but all the images I can find of this cable show standard USB Type A to USB type Mini-B connections. As I say, I cannot find any USB port of any description on my 7D body.
It's always my fault whenever I get muddled with cameras. What am I missing this time?!!

You're making this far too complicated.

A web search would inform you that the shutter count is stored in the ExIf data in every image from the camera. I.e. they're all numbered. What isn't easy is finding that information.

Just take a photo, and upload that image to any of many sites that will report the shutter count. RAW is usually best, but a JPG directly from the camera may work, too.

https://shuttercounter.com/  for one.
