Lens for Canon 400D

I need a good lens that is not very expensive for my new Canon 400D. I will be shooting insects and a few landscapes. Can one lens do it all, or do I need a macro and a zoom lens?

You are going to need to lens: A macro and a mid to wide angled zoom. Good luck with your photos.

Depending on your budget and needs a cheap "macro" lens is a tamron/quantaray 70-300. It can get pretty tight and is reasonably sharp for the less than $200 you will spend on it. It suffers from miserably slow focusing and chromatic aberration. There are plenty of options for wider lenses many of which you can probably get used for a reasonable price. Happy hunting.

I have a 55-200mm Tamron f4.5 zoom [£120] I have been very pleased with, check the Tamron and Sigma lenses available for Canon fit, very reasonable prices, obviously some picture quality gets lost at extreme ends but only the proffessionals wanting large files are really going to worry about that.

Hollywood .... I am not trying to be a wise guy when I write this response to your very good question ..... I'm sure that others have the same question.

True macro photography is 1:1 focal length .... several manufacturers offer zoom lens with macro capability. These can be a good place to start and see if you get "hooked" on macro shooting ... but keep in mind that a true macro lens is going to give you a chance to take better macro photos.

For landscapes you might look at one of the "do it all" zoom lenses for starters .... Sigma has an 18-200 and Canon offers one as well.

Landscape images can require several different lenses to cover a variety of needs .... for example an ultra wide lens (10-22) a mid wide zoom (16-35, 17-40 or 17-55) and a longer zoom (70-200) also many landscape photographers like the 24-70 and 24-105 lenses too.

A good comparison to photography is golf ... Can you play an entire round of golf with one club? Of course you can .... but how well can you play? The same applies to photography .... can you take photos having only one lens? Of course .... can you better cover a wider range of subjects and situations with a variety of lenses ..... Yes

Of course all of this depends on your budget.
