Which external hard drive do you recommend?

RAID 1 NAS.

I think personally a separate backup not within the same housing is better than RAID 1.  That way a power surge or something won't fry both your "backup" drives at once (I mean backing up your backup drive on another external drive is better than having two in one)

Of course if you use it as an external daily/weekly/monthly backup and you can afford to set up RAID 1, then why not do it.  Just another layer of protection you can have there.  Then you can always have another occasional backup drive separate from the RAID setup too.... in fact we could just keep going and going LOL.

Then you can forget about it for a few months and lose everything you'd done lately like I did the other day.

I go and read reviews at NewEgg every once in a while when I see a good sale, and there unfortunately isn't a hard drive on the market that doesn't have all kinds of complaints against it. Unfortunately, that's the nature of the technology.
