What should a photographer look for in a computer?

Yeah, it's that time for me and I would like to make my next computer purchase something that is more conducive towards a photographers needs.

When you bought your last computer, what was most important to you?

Also what the GPU is on the graphics card. I am still a gamer at heart, and it just so happens that a good gaming rig is great for image processing.

An 8-core i7 and at least 16GB of RAM, 32GB if you plan to work on large files in PS.

An SSD drive for booting and as the Photoshop scratch drive.

Lots of storage for images; RAID1 if you can swing it.

Now aren't they saying SSD drives are having some issues?

Nikon 18-55mm VR, Nikon 70-200mm VRII f/2.8, Nikon 50mm f/1.8, Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, SB-700 & SB-800

Well, I don't know who "they" are, but Apple uses them in their laptops, and there are an awful lot of fanboys that swear by Apple.

The technology is mature enough for use, and an SSD drive makes a great OS drive. Data, on the other hand, should be kept and backed up elsewhere. Which is why I suggested a RAID1 (on spinny drives).

I agree with Garyrhook.     I have had an SSD drive for years...LOVE IT.   And have never had a problem.  I also have spinning drive backups.   (Plural).  I have had my backup fail...but that (I then re-backed up from the SSD).  However, of course, always use backup(s).
