Hard drive from old computer fails to load

8 years 2 months ago #474686 by GWS
When I buy new computers I remove the old hard drive from my old and trash the rest.  I have a computer hard drive that is 6 years old from a old Windows XP machine that has some important images on it.  I have just tried accessing the drive and it's just spinning away and no error messages.  I can hear the drive doing something, however nothing is happening.

Any ideas?

You have to have it in the path of the BIOS if I'm not mistaken. Plus if it used a different operating system, that might have an effect as well. Hopefully Sean will answer this for you as he is more tech savvy than I am.

When it comes to hard drives and software, I bring it to a professional.  To much going on and I don't want to risk my inexperience harming something.

Is you old drives pins set to slave? Look up your drive to see how to do it. Then you can access the drive, usually without a hitch. Or the easier way to me is you unplug the new drive, and plug in the old one, and boot into the old system. XP will work, or always has for me with different hardware. The only problem I ever had was with screen resolution, and it going to minimum color schemes. Then all you do is take what you want to save off of the old drive, and transfer it to an external one, stick, or card.
I am guessing that your new machine has  Windows 10, or worthless edition.

Personally I used these sorts of USB adaptors , this will keep the computer from hanging up while it tries to start up & then you can if need be use some recovery software. As for a recommendation on that I use SpinRite , basically if that don't get it off prepare for a hefty bill from a data recovery service.

Well that USB adapter is something I have not seen, as it has been many years since I have had to do any of this with a system. I am going to get one now.
