LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt USB-C 5TB External Hard Drive transfer speed question

6 months 4 weeks ago #668161 by Joe Vertz
I see a lot of photographers using these orange drives.  But I just noticed the transfer rate is only 130MB/s.  Do they make a faster one?  That seems kind of slow compared to the SanDisk ones that transfer upwards of 550MB/s.

Does LaCie make a faster one?

This has nothing to do with LaCie drives.

Those are spinny drives, and (if you remember from back in the old days) they only have so much bandwidth. 130MB/s is actually pretty quick for that kind of device, where you are constrained by physical components.

SSDs are a different class of device. Therefore, you are comparing apples to oranges.

If you need faster, buy an SSD. LaCie products are no more or less reliable than most other external drives. They're just more colorful.
