Looking for advice on a scanner

I would like to get a high resolution scanner that I can take all my old prints/photos and quickly scan them to digital. What is the best or highest recommended scanner for this sort of work?

I would not buy anything w/less than a 4.0 dynamic range. If you are looking for quality reproduction, dynamic range is what you are looking for. It's the scanners ability to pull detail out of darker, more contrasty areas of the photo.

Also, If print size is important to you, 4000dpi scanner will get you a pretty darn good sharp 12x18" print. 2700dpi will get you a good sharp print around 8x12". You can print larger w/both of these dpi's... but these are pretty much a rule of thumb...

I would say biggest bang for your buck is a Nikon Coolscan V ED. It has a good dynamic range, good max dpi, and it's more on the affordable side for a quality film scanner.

I also would not recommend a "flatbed film scanner". The film strip holder does not hold the film "tightly flat" when scanning. This is important because if there is any kind of a wave in the film during the scan, you will have areas of the scan that will result in an "out of focus" area, and this can be frustrating. The nikons are dedicated film scanners where you feed the film into the slot and the scanner grabs the negative and pulls it in. The flatbeds scanners are like regular scanners where you would just lay the film in the holder, and lay the holder down onto the glass of the scanner and close the top over it.
