Looking for a nice P&S

Ok so I missed a sweet shot yesterday at the zoo cause I didn't want to drag out the 5Dii, so I am looking for a nice P&S to capture those memories as well as maybe put a few up on my website.

That is sweet! Although I was hoping for something that wouldn't cost me as much as a 70-200 piece of glass  .

Depends on your budget.
For $350, the Canon Powershot SX230 HS look good (12mp, 14x zoom).
For $400, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 (14mp, 24x zoom)
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 is $249 (14mp, 16x zoom)
these are B&H prices.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Just a suggestion... There are waterproof PS cameras out there. Might be fun if you go to any beaches or waterparks this summer.

You know I was looking at the SX230, and love that it has some manual abilities. It feels sacreligious to want a P&S but some days the big baby needs to rest.

I've owned 3 Panasonic P&S cameras and never had a problem with any of them. That SRL doesn't fit in your pocket or purse, does it? ;)

Not to mention that with some of the current P&S cameras, you can sit in the nose-bleed section at a ballgame or concert and still reach out and touch the performers.. impressive specs for something that can fit in your shirt pocket... well, not the one in your avatar maybe...

Lots of lovely choices these days. I could be happy with any of these -

A few critical questions:
Is the sensor on the Canon SX230 etc too small for your low light needs?

Is the zoom on the Panny LX5 too little for your needs?

Is the thickness of the Oly PEN too much for your bag / pocket? That does have a collapsing zoom lens which the other mirrorless brands lack.

Enjoy the hunt,
Kelly

Here is my 2 cents worth. I have a Pany TZ3 and it takes a really nice picture and has a big zoom. It has no way to manually control f-sop and shutter speed. HATE THAT! It also and I think most importantly does not have a viewfinder. If you are outside in a bright area you will have no idea on what you are taking a picture of. Never again will I buy a camera without A) manual control and B) no viewfinder. Things to ponder. Others may completely disagree, but I think these should be considered.

I really like the nikon coolpix cameras. I had an older one back in 2000, and now I have a nikon s210, and I love the size and quality. And I'm always pleased with how long the battery holds up. It didn't break the bank either. A few of my gallery pictures are from that one.

I bought the Canon G12 as my smaller Point and Shoot, it is a pro level since it shoots RAW. It isn't as small or light as some of the others, is just less than $500 but is a good camera with video.
Also the Powershots .

I can't really recommend a specific camera because I haven't had one for awhile and the technology has advance so dramatically since then. My best advice would be to find someone you know that has one and see the quality of the images it takes. The only place in my town to buy cameras is a computer store and the owner is a photographer. When a new camera comes in, she takes it out and captures a bunch of images, then displays them with the camera to show it's capabilities. Pamphlets that generally advertise a camera will always show high end pix to make the camera look better, so this personal touch is great.

My 12mp camera phone works great in a pinch...

Sure, practice makes perfect but, unless you learn from your mistakes, you are only perfecting your ability to fail.

I am a confirmed Nikon shooter (nut?), and my first digital camera was aNikon 995, which I still have. It pefroms amazingly for a 3.2MP sensor. But subsequent Nikon P&S have been very disappointing. I sold my 8800, ans will ot buy a Nikon P&S again. I use a Canon G11, which offers nealry as much control as a DSLR, fits in a pocket, and has an excellent lens. Since it isn't the latest model (the G12 offers improved video, but essentially the same still features), you can find it at a good price. I bought mine on e-bay (do you homework) and am very satisfied with it. I also gave my girlfriend and my daughter Panasonic Z6's, and tey tale excellent photos, but don't have all the features I would want (excellent lens, though).
Here's an example of a G11 capture:
