For days you just don't want to be carring around your DSLR, what is the best point and shoot camera on the market that has as many of the bells and whistles that a DSLR camera has?

The Lumix is popular. I don't have one, but plan on it.

... has as many of the bells and whistles that a DSLR camera has?

That would be the Canon G12, Fujifilm X100, Nikon P7100, Panasonic G-series Micro4/3 models, and Samsung NX11 (if you can even find one). All quite a bit more bulky and a lot more expensive than the nice Panny that Matthew listed. All with a viewfinder of some sort. Your request is too vague, "point-and-shoot" covers a wide range these days. At least give us a price target.

There are many options, but compact cameras tend not to be as similar to each other as DSLRs. I think it's important to assess your needs. You may have to rank what features you want. There is probably not a single compact camera that has all of the features of a DSLR, but you probably don't need all those features. You just need to make sure you go with the one that has the features you want.

For instance I need good high ISO quality. That means I need a camera with a larger sensor: M4/3 or APS-C. But a larger sensor means longer focal length lenses will be big. Another photographer may need more zoom and retain the compact size.

Another consideration is the controls. They come in a wide variety of styles and layouts. If you like or don't like the way you have to operate the camera it can effect your shooting.

Price will also be an issue. There are some wonderful compact cameras I'd love to own, but short of winning the lottery I'm not spending that much on a compact camera. It's just not worth it to me. To others it may be.

I am enjoying the image quality I'm getting from my Sony NEX-3, but there are plenty of things about it that bug me. I don't think the right compact camera for me has been built yet, but i have high hopes for the near future.
