My First DSLR

So, first post, and I’m looking for some advice.

Basically, my friend has gotten me hooked on infrared photography. Now I can appreciate that having a dedicated camera is a boon, but I'm looking for a good all-around general use camera, that can preferably shoot video as well, and that I can fit IR filters to the lens to achieve the desired effect as needed.

My my budget is a max of £400/$500 for camera and lens, but I would prefer it to come in around the £200-250/$250-300 mark.

Id prefer Canon, simply because my father has a 60D and has a decent selection of lenses to play with.

Any my suggestions for the sort of rig I should look into?

That's very low budget for a new DSLR. You might consider a T6 (Rebel), which is not the newest model. You might also consider earlier versions, possibly used.

If you really must stick to a bargain basement budget of $250, you're going to have to go used. And not get any new lenses, just a body.

Convince your Dad he needs to upgrade, and let you have the 60D.

Second hand was totally the goal, I don’t want a brand new camera as it may well be I can’t get the desired effect and end up disillusioned and sell all my gear.

I don't know that IR filters are equivalent to modded cameras, so you might want to google that.

That said, you're looking at an entry level DSLR, and there are plenty out there to be had. You can look at the Nikon site and figure out their numbering scheme (same for Canon) and browse eBay for candidates.  I believe that all models made in the last 6 years will shoot at least HD video.
