Err is usually given for bad lens contact. Clean lens connections and camera connections. When placing the lens on the camera, give the lens a slight wiggle back and forth if the err message is still showing. If this doesn't help, it may be an internal error.

I will suggest charging your Nikon battery and then reset the camera by pressing the tiny button on the body's bottom. ERR normally means lens-camera communication problems or electronic failure in the body.

I also think it's the contacts. I got rid of my D70s years ago (gave it to one of my sons along with two lenses)... Here is a link to a PDF manual...
