I need some help with my photo sharpening workflow please.

I have a question about sharpening - I've noticed that the sharpening effect when applied degrades slightly when I apply the sharpening to a layer?

Here's what I'm doing: I'm duplicating my master layer, I then call the new layer 'Sharpen 1" and apply sharpening using the smart sharpen filter. With sharpen filter open and my values selected as I want. Everything is looking pretty good at this point. It's not until I click "OK" that I notice some of the sharpening values have gone downhill??

What am I doing wrong here? I'm a newbie with Photoshop so learning. Thanks!

Are you shooting in RAW or jpeg? jpeg is sharpened in the camera but can sometimes need sharpened afterwards. RAW pretty much always need some sharpening. Sharpening is the last step in workflow. I use Unsharp Mask in PS. Zoom your photo to 100% so you can see how much you are sharpening. Depending on the type of photo, I usually have Threshold about 2, Radius about 1-2 and the amount will depend on how much it needs sharpened. Click the preview button. Also make sure your photo is already cropped to the size you want it.

I pretty much follow Jans procedure, it must be the last thing you do, unsharp mask is the best way in my opinion same figures as Jan exept radius which I set around the 5 to 8 mark and slide away on the % value until you have the desired effect.

I have never noticed sharpening effects degrading because they are done on a layer (assuming 100% opacity).

Are you looking at your results at 100% magnification? I'm using CS4, and it seems to me that magnifications less than 100% don't give an accurate representation of the sharpening I apply.

I've never seen that happen on any of mine. I will do some research to see if anybody else has seen that.

I have seen this happen, but usually as a result of not being zoomed in 100%... Similar to when you flatten layers or merge layers in Photoshop, sometime they look like they've moved, but when you do the same at 100%, no moving as occurred. Give it a try zoomed in at 100% and see if there's a difference.
