Buying Photoshop

Hi all, Not sure if I am in the right spot to ask this question. Hope so.

For the last year I have been using Picasa and Picnik to fine tune and enhance my photos but I want to move up now and try a more serious program.

I have been thinking of getting Photoshop. But someone suggested I just get Photoshop Elements, as it is a scaled down version of the larger program and easier to use.
I am a little aprehensive about using this program as it seems a little intimidating. I feel I may just give up and waste my money. Can anyone out there give me some suggestions? Or let me know how hard it is to learn this program???

Thanks in advance

Elements is fine. I recommend you get Adobe Lightroom instead. It's a tool directly geared for photographers and doesn't cost as much as regular Photoshop.

Why don't you download the FREE thirty day trial of each, and decide for yourself?......B)

Why so serious?

Good advice above

I went on a weekend class at my local college and learnt a little about photoshop, in the end I bought Elements because it was only £60-£70 and that was fine. Getting more into my work, I realise that Lightroom is probably the next step but that is a hike in price.

If you do a day training, or a couple of night classes, photoshop can be quite fun with just a little knowledge. Elements is all I need for the time being, full Photoshop is quite a cost and most editing can be done with Elements, I think the specialist work of a pro might be worth the extra.

I agree with Effron, i initially used the trial to familiarise my self with it.However to be honest thirty days is not enough to use every aspect its vast!! :) But agree it is costly.

I used elements for many years and it is quick and easy to get up to speed with the basics, there are so many tutorials on the web that it is fairly easy to pick up tips along your journey.

I use CS5 now but tend to do most of my work in lightroom 3 and do the more finneky stuff in CS5.

Both programmes are equally effective and maybe it will come down to your budget in the end, the trials are a good way to decide though.
