Anyone have any experience with the Spyder X Pro from Datacolor? Or a similar product? Would like to know how useful it was.

Very useful Esseff ,  if  you are serious about your output .

Although my Spyder (v4) is close to 10 yrs old now , so slightly dated , but still delivering good results (for my needs)  and it's still worth getting if you are serious about the colour / brightness consistency of your editing and prints .
The initial calibration routine is somewhat involved , but  periodic follow-up calibrations are fairly quick and easy  after that .  Would you say you use your monitor daily for several hours per day for your editing  ?
I do follow-up calibrations about 2- to 3-monthly because I do editing work most days for at 2-3 hours per day .
Does your PC/Mac have a built-in Calibration app ?  Macs typically have a built-in app  in 'System Preferences' folder > 'Displays' > 'Color' Tab > 'Calibrate' button to optimise the brightness / contrast / colour balance of your monitor , before doing the Spyder calibration .

Another product that gets good wraps is the X-Rite ColorMunki or DisplayPro .

cheers

Got the Spyder X Pro and just finished the calibration. I wasn't far off tbh. Colours were a tad too vivid on my screen, nothing wild though. The biggest difference was in brightness. The default screen brightness was quite high which means my photos were edited too dark. If I look at prints I made then I can see it now. Not a train crash but I'm glad I got it sorted now.

When I first started calibrating my monitors I also found that screen brightness was the biggest issue. My colors were very close and hardly needed tweaking.

For the most part, I'm really pleased with it and have no desire to stop using it. Now I've noticed a slight improvement in the skin tones of my lab prints; they were already good, but now they're even better. My main goal when I picked this up was to have greater control over brightness. Screen brightness can vary a lot, especially if you're not in a completely windowless room, so it's a tough task to keep it consistently bright under all conditions. The brightness settings available during setup don't offer enough flexibility. The options provided are either too extreme in one direction or the other. It would be helpful to have more fine-tuning options on the brightness scale for improved precision. Although the color correction feature is nice, it doesn't really assist with adjusting the brightness. When the system checks the ambient light, it often indicates my room is overly bright. It only seems dark enough when I turn off all the lights, but then it's too dark to see the keyboard, which is impractical. My lab prints still come out slightly darker than I prefer. It's also easy to accidentally hit the brightness key on the keyboard and disrupt the settings. I wish there was a way to quickly check and adjust brightness in the software, but it doesn't seem to be designed for that, unless you're in a space where the lighting doesn't change. Overall, at the end of the day, I'm satisfied and find the process incredibly straightforward!
