I am probably the rare exception:

I use UFRAW, then GIMP

an open source toolkit.

I get good enough results for my amateur needs... :)

I have used Photoshop CS3, together with Breezebrowser Pro for organizing images, and find it extremely useful. But after losing the CD the program became corrupted and will not start; so I presently have reverted back to CS2. Serif's "PhotoPlus 10" is much cheaper and has a lot of features but I prefer a more stable (sometimes PhotoPlus 10 locks up; and it always asks for my registration, even though I have registered it) and well known editing software. And, asking questions, like in this forum, is more meaningful when using a software editing program many others use, both professionals and amateurs.

I hope this helps,

I really like the Topaz plug-ins for Photoshop. Some cool features and tools in the bundle.

I get asked A LOT what filters I use in photoshop. I've used pretty much all of them, and don't really like anything but Noise Ninja. I do everything by hand and have pretty much reverse engineered every filter.

My workflow consists of.

PS 5 and Lightroom 3. Noise ninja is amazing though for noise removal.

I just updated to CS5, pretty much does everything you'd ever want a photo editing program to do. Like Scotty I prefer to use Photoshop's existing tools like masks, styles, gradients, blending modes, adjustment layers, etc., rather than extra plugins.

The two exceptions are Topaz Adjust and Topaz Denoise plugins.

EyeCandy 4000 is a really fun set of plugins I've tried. It has a nice realistic option for creating shadows.

I also use a program called PTGUI for stitching together panoramics, and sometimes Photomatix for HDR images.

For those using CS5, I'd highly recommend PixelBender. It's free for CS5 users only.

Just something fun to play with.

Here ya go, higher res will be in my gallery.

It does good oil paintings with scenary.
