Texture question

I'm just learning how to make texture layers in photoshop. I am wondering how you place the texture just on the background and not people in a portrait?

I'm gathering you dont know how to layer mask.

select the texture layer and hit the little button that the red arrow is pointing toward.
then color that layer with black and white. one will make the layer invisible, and the other will make it visible. if you need more explanation, just go on youtube and type in layer mask. I'm sure there are a billion videos on there about layer masking.

Dont be sorry QueenB, when Jayyyyy answered you with his 2 words he was assuming, and one should never assume, we are all at different levels of learning and I wish people would realise this, its almost as though they are looking down at you saying look at me aint I better than you, not that I am saying that was Jayyyyy's intention.
the second reply was far more informative and you should follow that advice, and I hope once you have learnt the technique you share some photos with us.
