Monitor Calibration & specifically *brightness*

13 years 4 months ago #7876 by FMVPhotography
I think I'll start another topic as I couldn't find reference in the search function....

I have a BenQ senseye+photo LCD monitor which I have calibrated in my editing software etc...

My problem however, is that my prints from the lab, although are fine colour wise are coming back dull. For instance I recently did a a location shoot for a toddler group which involved 15 minute slots for about 20 families over the day on my own (I know I must be mental!) using a high key, white paper backdrop, tungsten softboxes etc. I had a laptop for real time proofing on the day and after editing and adjustments on my monitor at home the images were great, uploaded to my website, again looked great. After getting orders and using an online lab for prints the results are a different matter.

Colours are fine - what was a 'high key' image looks decidedly grey and dull in the print.... I wondering if anyone has had the same issue? Do I have my brightness set too high? On screen images are crisp and white, prints are dark, dull, grey and I can literally see footprints and marks that do not show up on the screen. Basically I'm having a nightmare

Any advice welcome lol

If you have a properly callibrated monitor, there shouldn't be this problem.

What lab services are you using? is it by mail, or a location you visit? They may have uncalibrated equipment or they're auto-correcting their prints. Make sure to tell them to print completely neutral, with no density corrections whatsoever, and do some test prints.

Also, if PSP can use printer profiles, you can find out what machine your lab is using, and calibrate your software even more accurately with a downloadable printer profile.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply, I use an online service whom I have used before with no issues, perhaps it was because the images in the past weren't high key. I think I'll start again and calibrate from scratch, I'l also try and get the profiles used by the lab. Thanks for your help again Nick - I'll start posting q's just to you ;)
