Photoshop Filters problem

Do some filters not work if you are in 16bit mode? I just tried using the Smart Blur and that was the only blur option greyed out as well as all the "Artistic" menu. When I switched to 8bit mode, they all came back. Is this an error?

Yes, I have a lot of filters from other programs too that only work in 8 bit.

I didn't know you can only mainly work in 8 bit. Does anyone know why this is?

Good question. I have no idea. What if someone wanted to post process in 16bit only for all their images? They can only post processing to a point. Don't have access to all features.

It would require rewriting the software, and there hasn't been enough demand to do so for those filters. Most of those filters were created by someone else, not Adobe. The 8 bit versions are paid for. New 16 bit versions would need to be purchased again. In the future they will probably be updated or replaced, but who knows when that will be.

Another school of thought is that they are so "destructive" that there is little point in running them in 16 bit.

I've seen some mention of using Smart Objects to create an 8 bit layer in a 16 bit file, but you'll have to look that up on your own.

If I need to use a filter not available in 64 bit, I will save and reopen in 32 bit where all filters are available. Do what I want, save and reopen in 64 bit to continue.......:)

Why so serious?

So what you're saying is you are working with 32 bit information in a 64 bit file when you reopen it. I don't understand the reasoning behind this. I understand that any changes after re-opening will make use of the 64 bit range, but the original 64 bit range is gone once it's opened in 32 bit. Just curious of your thinking on this if you wouldn't mind explaining.
