Thank You WalMart!

I was at WalMart this morning picking up some prints. I was really dreading this as I have never picked up prints at WalMart before, but I have always heard that they will copy any copyrighted print for just about anyone. I have used MPix for my fulfillment for years, but this morning I needed a wallet sized print of my son for an application that we were sending. Anyway the girl behind the counter refused to print my work without a copyright release! I thanked her over and over again and happily provided her with a release.

I have got to say that it was a pleasant surprise. Probably never be back there again, but I feel much better about WallyWorld than I did previously. After multiple law suits, we are finally getting through!

In life there have always been those who make fire; but most just sit around the fire and enjoy the warmth. A great mind absent of action is waste.

I just had the same type of experience, except with Walgreen's...My Mother in Law was here for the holiday & she had wanted prints of some photo I had on a digital photo frame. I sent them to Walgreen's online but when my wife & her went to pick them up, they wouldn't release them without written consent from me...Seems I had left a watermark on them.

A few years ago, I did a portrait session for a friend and burn photos to a CD. She went to walmart and they wouldn't print because she didn't have my permission. So I had her sign a permission form. I know Walmart and Sams Club is really good on wanting that permission. Which is a good thing.

I've always known Walmart and Walgreens to ask for written permission regarding copyright. I don't use them myself, but my family and clients do. Some of the photo dept folks I've dealt with have been quite excitable in their desire to protect my photos. :) The problem is most of the stores also offer the self-serve kiosk for cheap, convenient, do it yourself copyright infringement.

About 2 decades ago a statewide professional photographers' association successfully sued a grocery store chain for ongoing copyright issues. It was a pretty big payout, and got a lot of press. After that all the stores around here clamped down on their photo policies.

Actually I had problems with printing at Sams. I wanted to make a reprint of my father's portrait from back in the day to surprise him as a present. Sams gave me a hard time, because I didn't take the portrait. I had to sign a form stating I take responsibility of the reprint, if that photographer of the portrait were to find out about the reprint.
