Framed prints vs canvas wraps for clients work

What are your thoughts on the two? If your recommending to many things to the client you can lose their interest. I'm somewhat still new wedding photography, but definitely learning as I'm going. I want to make more money on the back end of the weddings with product sales. But what is more appealing for wedding clients: framed prints for display or canvas wraps?

Framed looks more traditional and canvas has a more contemporary feeling to it. Which are you recommending the most?

Being in the "canvas business" I'll tell you that I might be a bit on the biased side... however; I know what I see and I know what my customers tell me.

Its all about the album. Many couples pay for the wedding with someone else's money. As such, you're going to need to give them something.... parent albums, a few nicely framed desk prints etc. Canvas is not really THAT much of an AFTER the wedding sale. Yes, sometimes the formal wedding portrait is part of the package, but honestly, the most common type of wedding canvas we do is when the bride and groom have a large (read 24x36 or larger) print done of their engagement session which is then displayed at the wedding.

Once again,we certainly do more than our fair share of bridal portrait images, but expecting a broke couple to break with 600.00 or so for a large wall canvas AFTER the event rarely happens. Most of what we see on the after bridal sales are smaller 11x14 and 16x20 pieces. However; we certainly do a large number of engagement shots BEFORE the wedding.

Something to think about...

Thanks for the reply and information. That does give me something to think about. I might need to rethink when I'm presenting certain things to clients. B)

Hi Maureen!

I'm going to have to agree with P2CDude... Albums are 100% the way to go.

I do, however, want to share an interesting tip we learned from husband and wife team Zach & Jody Gray during the Pricing, Process, and Profit workshop put on by ShootDotEdit. They said that they often invite their clients to their place to have a look at some of the photographs and to preorder an album while the wedding is still fresh in their minds. Zach & Jody have canvas wraps of themselves up on their wall, and they have found that some couples order canvas wraps because they were able to see it and envision their photos on their own walls.

Hope this helps! If you need an album proofing solution you know where to find us! :toocrazy:

Yup...We've always said that in order to sell a product, you have to show it! We're proud to sponsor Zach and Jody as well...so those wraps they talk about....chances are good they came out of our shop. But yes... back to the original point... show it to sell it.

Additionally, one other point. We often get asked....Which shot should I put on canvas for my samples? Generally people will have images in their portfolio which are their WOW pieces. Destination weddings, amazing locations, fantastic lighting....problem is that many times these WOW images are a result of high end locations or once in a lifetime opportunities. People want to see what they are going to get...so we always recommend that the products and images you show should be representative of what you provide to 90% of your customers.

So, instead of that beach wedding in Cabo San Lucas....perhaps a better session would be the wedding you shot at a local venue that your potential customers can relate to...

:agree: samples do all the selling. Get a nice canvas sample or framed sample in a clients hand and they will most likely order. Frames are tricky because there are so many to pick from vs canvas wrap is a canvas wrap. Well minus the quality factor.
