how to catagorize album cover photography?

7 years 6 months ago #499431 by yasminduran
I've just recently put my online portfolio up, and after reviewing some of the sections, I want to whittle down some of the people photography more manageable sections.  I just got done shooting the album cover and supporting promotional photography for a local Las Vegas band last weekend.  And I'm curious (because I am one for labeling things for purposes of organizing) whether album cover photography would fall under commercial, fashion, or editorial?  Or should I just call it Promotional photography?

Commercial seems to fit it best.

Editorial would mean for publication in a newspaper or magazine. Retail is merchandise (T shirts, mugs, etc.).

Photos could be categorized as fashion and also be commercial work but this doesn't seem to be fashion related.

Promotional could be part of commercial work when the photos are used to promote the band as a business.

I think that it's really your call - see how it looks with the other images in each of the portfolios you're considering and see where it looks most natural. You can make an argument for it belonging in any of those categories.
