I'm going into business doing portrait photography and probably anything else that walks through the door. I will be working with about $3,000 for everything. What camera and lenses should I get?

The nikon D700 is great for portraits, and it should cost you less than 2500.00. Are you looking for a specific brand of camera?

For your budget, maybe a Canon XXD, one new & one used for backup.

Question: Do you have anything?

If you dont you will need a lot, from lighting to backdrops, studio space, etc. I would recommend in this instance getting a D90, the 85mm f1.8 Nikor lens, a cheap tripod, and 2-3 SB-800 flashes. Spend the rest on a few blank backdrops (black, white, cream) and lighting equipment. In portrait photography the most important thing IMO is lighting the face in the desired way to capture or hide detail. Youll probably want a remote trigger as well.

If you have lighting equipment and space, then I would try to find a D700 and a 85mm f1.8 for under 3000$, good luck on that but I think if you try keh.com or amazon you migt could pull it off.
