Turning Photography Into A Career

I know that I am ready to start making money with my photography, but I am unsure on how to go about getting started. Do you start out small and work out of your home and do the word of mouth advertising. Or do you jump in and get an office and really put your advertising out there? Any help would be great.

Unless you have won the lottery or don't have to worry about money to pay bills and have another source of income, you best start out at home. Shooting people out doors is a big thing here and many photographers make a living doing just outdoor shoots. I'm a wildlife and nature photographer so my canvas is always outdoors. In the future, you can set up a room in your house or get a small building and turn it into a studio for indoor photo shoots. Also, get you some cards and go to all the schools to maybe get sports activities coverage, or school kid photos from each school.

Most any type of photography can be done from home. Unless, as the other poster mentioned, you have unlimited funds I'd suggest starting from home. The trend actually has been studios closing and photographers working from home.
Be sure that you set your self up as a business (consult your attorney and / or accountant). Build yourself a website or check out PhotoShelter or similar providers. Don't forget business cards, they are the cheapest form of advertisment and can be left everywhere. I go through about 2500 - 3000 per year and leave them with almost everyone I meet. I purchase mine from Overnight Prints .
I also suggest you purchase insurance as it is required for most venues that you'll shoot. Most will require anywhere from $1M - $2M and one of the venues that I shoot recently increased their requirement to $4M for all vendors. Since it is a business you homeowners will not cover. I have a seperate business policy.

Most people who try this don't succeed as they don't have the business acumen required to be successful. It doesn't matter how good of a photographer you are, if you don't have the business skills required, you can be doomed. I would suggest attending a course in business (marketing/management) at your local community college to help ensure your success...
