How do I......

How do I turn my business pro. As I stated in my intro my main focus is sprots photography, and I usually focus on ice skating. Although I have photographed all kinds of sports. How do I turn this into a caree? How do you get your foot in the door?

Professional Photography is a BUSINESS and needs to be treated as such. Acquaint yourself with business pratices including budgeting and how to make a profit. PPA is a great organization and have done lots of research into benchmarking for photographers (i.e. what your expenses and income breakdowns should be). I suggest you navigate to their website and look around. It is also a very worthwhile organization to join.
Most of what I've learned has been from the school of "hard knocks" but I'd suggest that you look at your local community college and take a business course, accounting course and marketing course. I've attended lots of seminars on marketing, selling and business topics and have learned a great deal from them.
Pick up a book by John Harrington, "Best Business Pratices for Photographers". It should be availble at your local Borders or Barnes & Nobel. If not it is avaible online from Amazon. It is a great book for both novices and experienced photographers.
If you have a local Professional Photographers organization in your area or state go to their meetings. ASMP - American Society of Media Photographers is another great organization and have local chapters. Membership requirements are tough but attending meetings as a non-member is OK.
If you are interested in Sports check out the Society of Event Photographers ( www.SEPOnline.com ) and www.SportsShooter.com .
Unfortunately most photographers who are or want to be professionals spend way too much time on their photography and not in their business. I taught a 16 hour course at a local community college on "The Business of Photography". I wish I could say it was well attended but it wan't. The "technique" courses I taught were always full of aspiring pros but they forgot or ignored the business side.

PBowling hit the nail on the head...Most people don't succeed because they don't have the business skills required to be successful...
