Using (limited) available light

12 years 5 months ago #169322 by rmeyer7
I came home after an evening shooting fall colors and found this truck parked on my street, with a street light shining on it. I thought it would make an interesting subject so I was getting ready to take some shots when another car pulled up behind it and sat there with the headlights on. So I decided to think of the other car as a back light and the street lamp as my off-camera key light to see what that would give me.

Any thoughts/comments?

(Took 2 exposures, did a "pseudo-HDR" by layering one over the other and playing with blending modes.)

Would have been nice to be able to take a step to the left so that white light was behind the truck, might have given it a nice backlit perspective. But sometimes you just gotta go with what you have to work with. Great subject for a cool picture.

:agree:
And thanks for the critique.

I actually was about to move over and try to get another perspective, but the driver of the car in the background finally turned off his lights. When I went inside and loaded the photos onto my computer I was kicking myself for not getting a better angle to begin with!

That's sometimes just how it goes. Guess we probably all sometimes get the shot and sometimes you don't.
